The Daily Binge presents:
Top Three Streaming Services of 2019
Kassidy A. Thomas (Staff Writer)
Finding the best streaming service for you is quite difficult as we enter 2020 with a plethora of services to choose from. A cheaper alternative than regular cable services, streaming has become an easy hack for college students across the globe. The team and I have set up the perfect tell all guide to break down a few of the most popular streaming services to date. Enjoy!
NO. 1: NETFLIX
Netflix is a fan favorite as it the OG of streaming networks. In the third quarter of 2019, Netflix had over 158 million paying streaming subscribers worldwide. Of these subscribers 60.62 million were from the United States. This also doesn’t account for the freeloaders much like myself that don’t physically pay for an account each month. With a starting price of $8.99 per month Netflix is fairly cheap compared to other streaming services such as HBO NOW or Amazon Prime Video. Titles come and go quite frequently on Netflix making it even more addicting. Our main reason for picking Netflix as No. 1 is simply for the brand-new content they produce themselves. Some of our favorite shows and films are directly from Netflix content creators such as House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and Money Heist. Massive social justice films such as “When They See Us, 13th, and A Twelve-Year Night are both Netflix films that took the nation by storm striking action in various movements.
NO. 2: SLING TV
Sling TV is by far the most used streaming services for families that don’t want the larger bill of cable yet still want to enjoy live programming. With Sling TV users are able to still enjoy live channels such as ESPN, CNN, Fox and more for only $25 a month. Sling TV has two-tiers of television options advertising itself as “a la carte TV.” Both packages are the same in price but are differentiated by channel selection and streaming limits. Sling Orange is for the sports lovers including ESPN, TBS, TNT, Lifetime and more. Sling Blue offers 48 channels and allows for three simultaneous streams. Sling Orange + Blue runs for $40 per month and includes all channels from both. The major con consumers associate with Sling TV is its lack of local broadcasting. Daytime television that many businesses play throughout the day gets lost along the way as many of those channels aren’t picked up through Sling. Sling TV encourages users who want local channels to purchase an over-the-air antenna through Sling that allows AirTV to integrate antenna broadcast with Sling’s simplistic interface.
NO. 3: DISNEY+
The newest streaming platform of them all is geared towards good ol family-friendly content. Disclaimer: that doesn’t mean it is all kids shows – but you won’t catch the raunchy rated-R movies anywhere on the streaming site. Disney+ cost $6.99 a month, making it one of the cheapest streaming networks to date. With over 500 movies from the Disney library and 7,000+ episodes of popular TV shows Disney is giving everyone a blast from the past. Beyond the existing content, Disney also plans to bring several old animated classics back with new episodes. New episodes of “The Proud Family”, “Kim Possible” and “That’s So Raven” are going to bring much joy to our millennial hearts. Our team decided to rank Disney+ in the top three for simple reasons: it’s new it’s fresh and it’s so fun! Disney+ is light hearted and meant for everyone to reminisce on their childhood favorites. The Disney catalogue has a wide variety dating all the way back to the early 1900s. With just over a month on the market Disney+ has 10 million+ subscribers. If you feel Disney’s hegemony on entertainment is crushing pop culture, you might want to steer clear – but if this is the content you want to watch it’s hard to argue with its pricing and endless catalogue.
